Musical Theatre Monday: Day 1

Are you just getting into musical theater and are overwhelmed about where to start? Look no further! On Musical Theatre Mondays, I'll pick a musical and describe it in detail so you learn if it's something you'd like to listen to!
I'll also provide plenty of recommendations if you enjoy that musical and are curious about where to turn to next.
If you have suggestions about which musical I should focus on next, please leave a comment below and I'll take your idea into consideration.
Musical 1: The Phantom of the Opera
Aesthetic: dark, romantic, melancholy, gothic. Music: operatic, rich, complex. Dance: ballet.
The Phantom of the Opera follows the story of Christine, a young soprano, whose talents draw the attention of a musical genius living below the opera house in which she performs. If you enjoy a dark plot [TW: Murder], a love story, and gorgeous sets/costumes, you will adore the Phantom of the Opera.
Recommendations: Les Miserables (similar aesthetic in the romantic category), Jekyll and Hyde (similar gothic aesthetic), Sweeney Todd (similar dark aesthetic but Stephen Sondheim was an excellent composter).
